The lack of evidence for significant plant food consumption by the majority of Neolithic individuals analysed from the middle Rhine is surprising considering the archaeological evidence for extensive grain cultivation in this region. However, without a greater understanding of how food components are converted to bone collagen it is difficult to estimate the proportion of plant and animal food in the diet. It is likely that stable isotope analysis is particularly insensitive to even moderate consumption of low protein foods such as plants. Nevertheless, a large number of individuals had δ15N values equal to or higher than the maximum theoretically predicted from the consumption of pure herbivore protein, thus reinforcing the inference that plant foods were not a major dietary component. Whilst we do not necessarily disagree with this interpretation there are several other explanations: as already noted, freshwater fish with elevated δ15N may constitute a further dietary element not necessarily precluding the consumption of substantial amounts of plant foods. However, comparison between the δ13C values of archaeological fish bone and human bone collagens does not support the interpretation that they were a prominent dietary component. (1068)
